Hi zleduc, I used mandelbulb3D. really powerful, a bit complex, but hey, thats what late nights are for!
AND it can create AMAZING animations. if you've never seen it look on youtube for mandelbulb3D animations. you're in for a treat!

I use Blender, its amazing considering its free! The latest version is very advanced.
